"Mars Cinema Science Jazz" - visual jazz with a touch of astrophysics.
The idea of the band is to capture the powerful storytelling mood created in the 40s by old radio drama but to adapt it into a more modern film-like feeling. The music features melodies and unusual rhythms that combine with complex story vignettes that are based on topics in astrophysics.
The music evokes detailed visual images concerning Mars, the migration of the Polynesians from Peru, space flight, magnetic field reversals, and solar coronal mass ejections.
About half of the tunes are instrumental ala Ralph Towner or Nels Cline. The rest involve intricate mixes of a vocal narrative with music & sfx's to conjur up complex film-like "scenes".
Guitares Cinématiques is a solo band featuring the guitarist, Nicolas. Nicolas plays a custom classical guitar (designed by Dr. Michael Kasha and built by Jay Hargreaves and the late Richard Schneider) that is also configured to play MIDI (i.e synthesizer instruments) just like a keyboard. In college Nicolas double majored in physics and classical guitar while minoring in foreign languages. Nicolas studied privately with guitarist Ralph Towner of the world music group Oregon and with jazz guitarist Steve Cardenas. His other musical influences include guitarists Egberto Gismonti, Joao Gilberto, Baden Powell, the bands Yes and Weather Report, and classical composers Kodaly, Bartok, and his favorite composer, Chopin.
